pie safe, even within the same country this antique object
could be called by different names. While some people called it
pie cabinet, others knew it as pie cupboard. Some
gave it the common name of pie safe, while some other sets
of people found it suitable to call it kitchen safe or screened safe.
The antique pie safe had its origin in Germany, in Europe.
It was introduced by the Germans to the United States. The Germans immigrated
into the United States and settled in Pennsylvania, they were since referred
to as the Pennsylvania Dutch.
Though the name tag of this antique object was linked to
pie, the real truth was that they were used for some other things
apart from protecting pies. Some people even used it for
protecting their bread and even cake.
The wood of choice for making the pie safe, especially
in the southern states was pine. Some manufacturers from other backgrounds
did make use of other types of woods in making the antique pie safe.
It was usually built as tall and narrow furniture. It was
made in such a way that one could move it around as case may be.
To be able to maintain the food stored in the pie safe
over a considerable period of time, the pie safe should
be kept as far away from the stove as possible, since excessive heat from
the stove could damage the content of the pie safe. The
pie safe should then be stored in an area where it can
have access to as much cool air as possible.
The pie safe was designed with cabinets inside to hold
the food substances it was used to keep. Screen were designed in the top,
sides or doors of the antique furniture with the intention
of allowing for ventilation into the pie safe while at
the same time keeping flies and rodents away from the food. This ventilation
helps to prevent the growth of moulds on the food and also allow the food
to stay cooler.
When on the mission of purchasing an antique pie safe,
you will need to keep various things in mind. It is important to check the
present condition of what you are purchasing and also the types of designs
or furnishing that are on the pie safe.
